Right Whales Sighted Off Bay Saint Lawrence, Cape Breton

“Been fishing over 30 years and this is the first Right Whale I”ve seen,” said Captain Cyril Fraser
of Oshan Whale Watch,  which is based in the village of  Bay St. Lawrence, Cape Breton.  A fifth generation fisherman, Cyril mostly sees Pilot and Minke whales and dolphins.
 
“The Right Whales are around 50 tons, compared to the Minkes and Pilots   which are more like 5 tons.”
 
One of our guests from Ontario, Tullio d’Angelo, provided us with a the snapshot  of the Right Whale taken off while with Captain Cyril.

North Trail to Indian Brook Falls

We awoke to fantastically blue skies on Monday morning, perfect conditions for a hike up the river!
We rounded up the gang, an international selection of woofers from Switzerland, China and UK and some guests, including journalist David Holt and Laughter Yoga teacher Linda LeClerc.

We were of course joined by lively Cosmo who bounded ahead in the Spring sunshine!

We were remarking the trail to the waterfall with orange tape. The path had become somewhat overgrown, so we shifted a few trees and branches as we went and admired the beautiful views.

It was quite a scramble down to the brook.

Fun Downhill Skiing at Cape Smokey

Cape Smokey is a nice little ski area on the Cabot Trail, right at the edge of Ingonish.
It is open through March, from Friday through Sunday and everyday during March Break.
Staffed by volunteers, the rentals and skiing are very economical.  And best of all are the
views you get of Ingonish Island, Ingonish Harbor and Middlehead.
The conditions were good the day I visited in March and I couldn’t help but look out on the
Harbour, each time I got to the top.   Pack ice comes in from the Atlantic and forms an amazing
vista.

Hiking Adventures

Cabot Shores sits on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton, along the Cabot Trail and out the door you can beach comb, hike through our nature sanctuary or head for the Cape Breton Highlands.
