Spring Thaw | Discover Local Nova Scotia Waterfalls

As the weather continues to warm, Cape Breton Island starts to come to life. Wildflowers start to come to life, and rivers start to flow as ice and snow melt. However, it’s not just rivers that get moving. If you’re planning a getaway to Cabot Shores in late spring, leave room in your schedule to explore local Nova Scotia waterfalls. Our resort’s location on the Cabot Trail puts you in a fantastic spot for waterfall chasing.

Cabot Shores itself sits along Indian Brook, the home for at least 3 waterfalls. More experienced hikers can go up to the Great Falls at the centre of Indian Brook or to the Widow’s Veils Falls on the south side of Indian Brook. Again, it is for more experienced hikers and makes for a good lunch and swim along the way.

Hike to Waterfalls near Our Cabot Trail Resort

When you reserve one of our Cabot Trail vacation rentals, adventure is all around you, including hikes out the door of your accommodations. Choose to set off on your own or sign up for one of our guided hikes. Keep in mind that trails and areas around the falls can experience seasonal closures due to weather, although folks from A for Adventure and Dr. Paul among others have snowshoes up to Indian Brook Falls during February.

In terms of leaving Cabot Shores, consider:

  • Located near Baddeck is the Uisge Ban Falls. Requiring a roughly two-hour round-trip hike to reach, the path takes you through hardwood forest and along a scenic brook before you reach the 16-meter waterfall.
  • If you’re driving the full Cabot Trail, be sure to stop by Beulach Bàn Falls. Found only a short walk from a parking area, this is one of the easiest waterfalls on the island to access.
  • Indian Brook Falls is accessible via our on-site hiking trail on the northwest side. The trail to the falls runs alongside the brook and offers hikers access to swimming holes and wild strawberry patches.
  • Found within Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Still Brook Falls are one of the few falls where visitors can access both the top and bottom. Parking to reach this spot is available at either the Jack Pine trailhead or the Black Brook Beach Day Use Area, which is open from mid-May to mid-October.
