The Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail
The Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail is a Cape Breton hiking Treasure during all 4 seasons–even during winter.
But if the Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail were a ship, the Treasure may have been buried at sea after the Louisbourg Coastline Trail got smashed by Hurricane Fiona in 2022.
Ever wondered what happens when nature decides to redesign one of the most beloved hiking trails? Let me tell you about the Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail – a crown jewel of Cape Breton’s outdoor experiences.
🌅 The Original Glory
Picture this: A stunning 2km trail starting at a historic lighthouse, where the Atlantic Ocean puts on a daily show. We’re talking dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and waves creating natural water fountains as they crash against rocky shores. For years, this was THE spot where locals and visitors alike would come to soak in pure maritime magic. Dr. Paul says he needs a “monthly dose” of the Lighthouse Trail, regardless of the season.
🌪️ When The Hurricane Fiona Struck
But then… September 2022 happened.
Hurricane Fiona came roaring in like an uninvited guest. This wasn’t just any storm – it was a trail-wrecker of epic proportions. Boardwalks? Gone. Those charming wooden bridges? Scattered like pickup sticks. Even the wild cranberry patches couldn’t hold on against Fiona’s fury.
🌟 The Comeback Story
But here’s where this story takes a beautiful turn…
Fast forward to fall 2024, and wow! The trail didn’t just come back – it came back better. The rebuilt path now rides higher along the coast, offering even more breathtaking Atlantic views. It’s like getting a front-row seat to nature’s greatest show, with bonus vantage points of surrounding hills and forests you couldn’t see before.

❄️ A Year-Round Wonder
In winter, it transforms into a wonderland where ice sculptures form naturally along the rocky coast. Even with some spots looking almost desert-like, you’ll spot signs of life everywhere – from soaring seabirds to mysterious coyote tracks in the snow.

🎯 The Final Verdict
Here’s what makes it special: Whether you’re a summer swimmer or winter snowshoer, this trail delivers year-round adventure. It’s not just a path – it’s a testament to resilience and smart redesign. It is a gravelled trail at the outside, well-maintained by Parks Canada. It then extends to that avid hikers and snowshoe enthusiasts can continue further along the Louisbourg coast, enjoying a swim, picking some cranberries and sampling views of an ever-changing Cape Breton landscape.
Special thanks to Blair Pardy, Field Unit Superintendent of the Cape Breton for Parks Canada–including the Cape Breton Highlands Park, Cheticamp Campground, Broad Cove Campground, ….and Fort Louisbourg.
And to Robie Gourd, park engineer and the very talented designer of the New Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail available winter, spring, summer and fall for locals and visitors alike.
