Cabot Trail in spring offers a breathtaking introduction to one of North America’s most scenic drives, as this iconic route winds along the dramatic coastline of Cape Breton Island and comes alive with fresh greenery, cascading waterfalls, and fewer crowds than peak seasons. As the snow starts to melt across the highlands and coastal landscapes begin to turn green again, the region feels peaceful before the busy summer season. Located just off the Cabot Trail, Cabot Shores is an ideal place to experience the quieter side of Cabot trail in spring.
If you’re considering a spring getaway to this iconic coastal route, here are five things to know before you arrive.
1. You’ll See Fewer Crowds
Spring, especially April through early June, is considered shoulder season. This means scenic overlooks and hiking trails are much quieter. You’ll also have an easier time reserving lodging at our Nova Scotia resort.
2. Some Seasonal Businesses May Still Be Closed
Because the trail is a seasonal tourism destination, not everything opens right away in the spring. This means some restaurants, tour companies, and even small museums won’t open until late May or early June. You also have to consider that visitor services in Cape Breton Highlands National Park may have limited hours. We recommend checking opening dates if there are specific attractions you want to visit.
3. Wildlife Sightings Are Common
This time of year is a great time for wildlife along the Cabot Trail. As the weather warms, animals become more active. During your adventures, you might see moose along the road, bald eagles soaring along the coast, and whales migrating offshore. Lately, we have seen otter along Church Pond and Indian Brook as well as moose tracks in our apple orchard, while eagles are a constant presence sitting on spruce trees on Eaglefeather Beach.
4. The Weather Can Change Quickly
Spring weather in coastal Nova Scotia is unpredictable. Within 24 hours, you can experience cool ocean breezes, sun breaks with incredible views, and fog along the cliffs. Because of this, it’s a good idea to make sure you have layered clothing and a light jacket on your packing list.
5. Enjoy Fresh Green Landscapes

As snow melts, the landscape in and around our Cape Breton property comes alive. Rivers and waterfalls are at their strongest, and early wildflowers appear along hiking trails. Whether exploring our wilderness trail along Indian Brook or going for a drive along the 298 km loop that makes up the Cabot Trail, there’s no shortage of stunning sights to see.
