Spring has finally sprung here on Cape Breton and along with the first garden and wild greens have also come a series of guests who observe a gluten-free diet.
Rice cakes for breakfast go only so far until they become oh so boring. So I finally screwed up my courage and attempted to bake a loaf of gluten-free bread. Having been repeatedly asked for the vegetarian and vegan recipes for the dishes served in our Bistro, we are offering a medly of Cabot Shores Winter Veggie Recipes.  All the vegetables used are considered winter vegetables and should be available locally and/or from your own root cellar.  All the recipes use fresh, non-processed ingredients and produce dishes that are tasty, nutritious and healthy.  They can be modified for vegans.

Wood Fired Pizza Oven Extravaganza!

This past weekend we hosted a retreat for Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia (BCANS), and among the activities was a sunny Saturday afternoon of pizza making with our new wood fired brick oven that I helped build.  In the morning I made the dough and started the fire, allowing two hours for the dough to rise and the oven to get hot enough to bake in.  I got the ingredients ready, which included zucchini and onion from our own garden, and around noon the oven was ready!  It takes one or two test pizzas to really understand how hot it […]
