Still swimmng on Cape Breton–especially the Moose

Many of our guests want nothing more than to see a Cape Breton moose.

Last week during a Road Scholar Retreat, a group saw all kinds of moose skat on the path to Indian Brook–but no moose.  Then, the next day, Catherine, a guest from San Francisco, came upon one.
Her husband, Nicholas, was skeptical.  “Where’s the picture?”  he said, only half jokingly?
Well, today, another couple, Robert and Christine (of Sydney Australia) were driving the Cabot Trail and visiting Mary Ann Falls.  Just after returning to the Cabot Trail, they stopped at a pond and there it was–a moose, a big bull […]

Road Scholar: Culture & Outdoor Adventure on Cape Breton Island

A group of Road Scholars gathered for a series of June of Adventures
at Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.  This was
followed by an Intergenerational Program in July.  In September and October, two
more sessions will be at Cabot Shores.

For the June retreat, the Road Scholars  hiked to waterfalls and along the Atlantic; had guided experiences
in native Mi’kmaq and Gaelic culture; heard and made live music; ate
local lobster and wood-fired pizza; did Qi Gong and laughing yoga, and learned about the
local wildlife, both from land and on a trip to the Bird Islands, led by
experienced local guides and […]

Camping without the roughing-it edge
Article by Paul Brent in the National Post July 3, 2012

(Cabot Shores in Good Company in National Post Article)
Journalist Paul Brent of the National Post called about a month ago and said he is doing an article on luxury camping.  He’d seen our website and asked for pictures of Chalets, the Yurt and Tipi.  We had a good chat.
Today the article is online, called “Camping Without The Rough- It Edge”.  Cabot Shores is in great company, with the Clayoquot  Resort of Tofino, B.C, a  […]

Moose Viewing All Seasons at Cabot Shores along the Cabot Trail

Many guests to Cape Breton say they’d really like to see a moose.
In the same sentence, they ask: is it safe?  And except for rutting season and running into one along the road while you’re driving, the moose are quite safe and tend to disappear or blend into the bush.
Seeing A Moose On The  Shores of Church Pond

A few days ago, I was paddling a kayak in Church Pond with my dog Cosmo, going into an inlet and kind of daydreaming. Suddenly Cosmo started barking,  and jumped into the water, swimming toward shore.  I looked up and saw a big […]

The Story of the Breton Cove Farmhouse

The Story is about

the land of 180 acres deeded by the king of England along the Atlantic, and the place was once

A self-sustaining farm with pastures, a  barn, chicken coop, hog house,  orchards, garden…
A sawmill
The border to lobster fishing territory where boats landed at Skir Dhu (Black Rock)

The Urquehardt   family over time

Had midwives using the main house for “birthing”
Adopted 5 kids
Was a neighborhood center across from the Gaelic Singers’ Hall and ball field

The place fell into disrepair over 20 years vacancy, its roof caved in and hunters sat upstairs poaching moose and and drinking beer.
The bedroom walls were caved […]

Cape Breton In May: You never know who shows up…Europeans, lobsters & eagles…

May is an interesting month here; one of the few times in the year, when guests just seem to arrive without prior reservations.  Many are Europeans who, disliking crowds, prefer to travel in the off-season. At this time, the majority of these travel by van, camper or mega-camper.  This is a phenomenon we’ve observed in other years and we thought we’d acknowledge these brave travelers who venture out not knowing where they will sleep each night or wether they can even find a place that’s open at this time of year.
When they find us, they set up in a spot with […]
