NADA Auricular Acupuncture Protocol

What is the NADA protocol?

The NADA (National Association for Detox Acupuncture) protocol uses a set of five points on the outside of the ear that have been shown to be effective in treating a variety of health problems. Five very small, sterile and disposable needles are gently inserted into these points. The recipient then sits quietly for 30-40 minutes, relaxing or meditating while the needles exert their effects. Treatment takes place one or more times per week, depending on the person’s condition, usually in a group setting, and, for additional efficacy is generally combined with other forms of treatment such as counseling, and/or self-help groups.

What are the benefits of the NADA protocol?

The benefits are many. Initially, the protocol was primarily used to help people stop using addictive substances, such as tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin etc. For these people, the protocol significantly reduces cravings, decreases withdrawal symptoms and supports a drug-free life.

Over time, the NADA protocol has proven to be effective in treating other conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • High levels of Stress
  • Post-traumatic Stress

In addition, the protocol can help people to decrease angry or violent outbursts and it promotes increased focus and concentration, improved communication, emotional stability, patience, inner calm and a relaxed state.

History of the NADA protocol

Though acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, the NADA protocol is a recent development. In 1972, a Hong Kong neurosurgeon discover that auricular (ear) acupuncture significantly alleviated withdrawal symptoms in patients with opiate addictions. In 1974, the protocol was first used at Lincoln hospital in New York City. It has since been refined and modified and due to its huge success is now used all over the US and world-wide.
